The light is high and fairly flat, typical of open midday sun, which leaves the elephant's hide evenly lit but without the modelling that would reveal its wrinkled texture. Shadows fall short and hard beneath the belly rather than sculpting form. The background foliage is brightly lit, competing with the subject for attention. Softer, lower-angle light of early morning would rake across the hide, add dimensional depth, and separate the grey animal from the equally toned greenery behind it.

Exposure is well controlled overall. The elephant's mid-grey hide sits at a natural brightness with detail retained across the flanks and no crushing in the shadowed belly.
