A moody industrial night scene that leans hard into colour contrast — magenta and cyan artificial light playing against warm sodium glow on the ground — and it largely succeeds. The layered steel structure, staircases and gantries build genuine depth, and the diffraction starburst gives a natural focal anchor. What holds it back is a slightly cluttered read: the eye bounces between the bright starburst, the lit staircase and the foreground pools without a single clear path. The lower foreground is a large area of empty sodium-lit asphalt that carries little information. Tighter organisation and a small crop would sharpen the impact considerably.

The layered industrial framework creates strong depth, with steel columns receding down the right and the illuminated staircase pulling the eye into the middle distance. The starburst light acts as an effective anchor on the left third. Balance is the weak point: the right edge is a heavy slab of near-black structure, while the lower third is a broad, empty expanse of lit ground that adds atmosphere but little detail. A slightly higher framing or tighter crop from the bottom would concentrate attention on the richer mid-ground geometry.

The lighting is the strongest element — a deliberate, effective interplay of cool magenta and cyan artificial sources against warm sodium spill washing the floor. That colour-temperature split gives the scene its cinematic charge and separates the metal structure from the ground. The magenta point light rendering as a clean starburst is a bonus of the small aperture. Direction is a touch flat on the concrete stairwell wall, leaving it evenly lit rather than raking, but overall the mixed-source palette is handled with real intent.

The 25-second exposure at ISO 100 keeps the file clean and holds highlight detail in the bright sodium pools on the ground, which could easily have blown. Shadows are deep and largely intentional, preserving the mystery of the structure, though the right-hand columns and far background fall into near-total black with no recoverable detail. The starburst core is clipped, which is acceptable for a point source. Midtones on the lit staircase sit well. A frame or two brighter would have opened the deepest shadows without harming the highlights.

The colour grade is the signature here: saturated magenta and cyan against amber, a bold complementary scheme that reads as intentional rather than accidental colour cast. Saturation is pushed but stops short of clipping the magenta channel. The warm sodium foreground provides welcome tonal relief from the cool structure. White balance is a non-issue given the mixed artificial sources — the split is the point. If anything, the magentas verge on oversaturated in the brightest wash, where a little restraint would preserve more texture in the concrete.

Settings are well matched to the subject. f/11 across a 25-second exposure at ISO 100 on the 5D Mark IV is textbook long-exposure night discipline: base ISO keeps noise negligible, and the small aperture both maximises depth of field across the receding structure and produces the clean diffraction starburst from the magenta point source. The 129mm setting on the 70-300 compresses the industrial layers effectively, stacking gantries and stairs into a dense, telephoto read that suits the compression well. Focus appears accurately placed on the mid-ground staircase, with sharpness holding across the frame thanks to the deep depth of field. The only technical caveat is that f/11 on this consumer zoom sits near where diffraction begins to soften fine detail slightly, and the deepest shadows show the limits of a single exposure — some blocked-up blacks could have been recovered with exposure bracketing. A sturdy tripod was clearly used; there is no motion blur in the static structure.
